Help with Coursebird

Coursebird is in beta, built by a student. Works at most US colleges. Not made by or affiliated with your school or the company behind its course site.

Connecting your classes

On a computer, the Coursebird Sync extension for Chrome brings everything in at once: your classes, grades, syllabi and announcements. Get Coursebird Sync from the Chrome Web Store, open your course site, click the Coursebird icon in Chrome's toolbar, then Sync now.

Or use your calendar link. On your school's course site, in a web browser (not its phone app), open Calendar, click Calendar Feed at the bottom right, copy the link, and paste it into Coursebird. Announcements need one more link per class: in the class, open Announcements, then the RSS link at the top right.

Reminders

The app reminds you 24 hours and 2 hours before each deadline, and a week, a day and the morning before each exam. Reminders are set for your next deadlines (iPhones hold a limited number at once) and refilled every time the app opens or syncs.

On iPhone, when Background App Refresh is on for Coursebird, Coursebird also checks your course site now and then while it's closed. iPhone decides when, so it isn't a schedule. It sends a notification for what you picked under Remind me about: a due date that moved, an item that appeared or disappeared, or a new announcement. A moved date shows the old and the new date, when the change was posted and whether your syllabus agrees. On a moved date or a removed item, the Didn't know button opens the change and counts it on Home's This term line. The reminders themselves are corrected the next time the app opens.

Settings > Notifications > Checks while closed shows when the check last ran. It also says when Background App Refresh is off for Coursebird, or when the checks run but can't notify you (notifications off for Coursebird, or Reminders off).

Something looks wrong

• The "Checked" time turns amber, or Home says your list is from earlier: the last check didn't get through. Open Settings: if the calendar link says Turned down, your course site reset it, so copy a fresh one and paste it in.
• An item is missing from Coursebird: with only the calendar link, Coursebird knows what your course site's calendar feed lists. Coursebird Sync also finds work with no due date, on each class's Work tab. Anything posted only in modules or said in class can be added with "Add a task" in the Planner.
• An item says it may have been removed: it was on your course site before and not in the latest sync. Coursebird waits for a second sync before calling it removed.

Your data

Everything Coursebird keeps stays on your device. What leaves it, and when, is on the privacy page. Settings has Download my data to move it to another device, and Delete everything.
